The city as a pathway through art
Artineris was born from the experience of Rome Art Week, a citywide event dedicated to contemporary art that has gradually built a network of artists, curators, galleries, foundations, associations, artists’ studios, academies, collectives, independent spaces and cultural institutions distributed throughout the city.
The evolution of Rome Art Week made it increasingly clear that the project had become much more than a simple art week. The annual event remains a central moment, as it focuses attention, encourages direct engagement with the public and increases the visibility of the local art scene. However, the work of mapping, connecting and promoting the artistic communities found across the city continues throughout the year.
Artineris was created from this experience: a project dedicated to developing a permanent platform capable of making the artistic geography of cities visible and transforming it into an accessible, searchable and continuously evolving network.
The name is formed through a blend of the internationally recognizable word art and the Latin term itineris, derived from iter, meaning route, journey or path. Artineris therefore evokes the idea of a journey through art, as well as a network made up of places, people, experiences and relationships.
It is not simply a temporary event or a calendar of activities. Artineris is conceived as a permanent platform capable of making the artistic geography of a city visible by connecting artists, curators, galleries, foundations, museums, associations, artists’ studios, academies, collectives, independent spaces and cultural institutions.
Every city has an artistic scene that is richer and more complex than what usually emerges from its best-known circuits. There are places, people and projects that operate throughout the year, but often remain fragmented, overlooked or difficult to discover for those who are not already part of the sector. Artineris was created to connect these points and transform them into a system that is readable, accessible and easy to explore.
The map lies at the heart of the project. Each artistic entity can be presented through a dedicated profile containing information, images, contact details, activities, events and further materials. These profiles are not merely promotional tools. Over time, they contribute to the creation of a living archive of the local art scene.
Artineris also proposes a different way of experiencing contemporary art. The public is not simply invited to visit a single exhibition or venue, but to move through the city, create personal routes, discover different neighbourhoods, enter artists’ studios, explore exhibition spaces and meet curators, collectives and cultural professionals.
The city thus becomes a kind of distributed museum. Not a traditional museum confined within a building, but an open and dynamic system made up of places, events, routes and relationships. A gallery, an artist’s studio, a foundation, a temporary exhibition or an independent project can become a stop along a personal journey, freely created by each visitor or suggested through thematic and geographical itineraries.
The idea of a pathway is central to the identity of Artineris. The platform does not simply gather profiles and information. It organizes content in a way that helps the public find their bearings and build experiences that reflect their own interests. Geographical proximity, neighbourhoods, artistic languages, themes and types of venue can all become useful criteria for exploring the city and discovering new realities.
Technology supports the real-world experience without replacing it. Maps, profiles and itineraries reduce the distance between the public and the places of art, transforming fragmented information into a clearer and more accessible system.
Artineris is not only a tool for the public. It is also a network of connections for professionals in the sector. Mapping enables artists, curators, venues, foundations, associations and institutions to discover one another, establish relationships, share opportunities and develop collaborations. Each presence on the platform is not merely a point on a map, but a potential connection with other participants in the city.
The project also stems from the desire to overcome the time limits of traditional Art Weeks. An art week plays an important role because it focuses attention, creates a recognizable moment and increases the visibility of the local art scene. But a week inevitably has a beginning and an end.
Artineris preserves the strength of concentrated events while building something that remains over time. The profiles, maps, pathways, information and relationships created during the event remain available. The annual event therefore becomes one of the main moments in which the platform is activated, rather than its sole reason for existing.
The project continues throughout the year as a tool for knowledge, orientation and promotion.
Artineris is designed as an open and replicable model. It can be applied to different cities while respecting the specific characteristics of each territory. Every city has its own art scene, a different distribution of spaces, neighbourhoods with distinctive identities, established institutions, emerging realities and unique cultural routes.
The aim is not to standardize these differences, but to make them visible. The platform can adapt to different contexts, creating a dedicated map for each city while maintaining a shared structure.
In the future, Artineris can become an international network of cities connected through contemporary art. Each city can represent an independent node, with its own places, protagonists and pathways, while remaining part of a wider system.
Art does not live only in museums or well-known venues. It lives in studios, galleries, foundations, neighbourhoods, associations, academies, independent projects and relationships between people.
Artineris was created to make this complexity visible. It is a map to explore, a network to build and a journey to experience.
It is the pathway of art through the city.
